BEFORE VICTORIA
THE SAD MACHINES
INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

*Who or what is Before Victoria?*

Before Victoria is the solo project/sort-of-band of Marc Burrows, bass player in The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing. It came about because he had some songs that wouldn’t work in his main band. He wrote some more and released them as ‘Carry On Up The Chartists’ in summer 2016, and played a handful of shows with a band made up of friends and members of TMTWNBBFN.

*What is The Sad Machines*

The Sad Machines is Marc’s new album. It’s put out under the Before Victoria name because he thinks that’s a better name for music than the one he was born with. It is an album of entirely electronic music, made entirely on his own, at home.

*What is it about?*

The whole album is about mental health, depression and heartbreak.

*That sounds very depressing.*

Yes. It kind of is.

*What were the musical inspirations for the album?*

Early New Order, the slower end of NiN and Depeche Mode, Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk, Adore-era Smashing Pumpkins, Kid-A era Radiohead. That sort of thing.

*Who is on it?*

I’m glad you asked- Marc sings/narrates four songs himself, another four songs feature guest vocalists, all of which wrote their own words: Joanna Lazar aka. Jojo the Burlesque Poetess, of Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, Nicoletta Wylde, Andy Heintz of The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing and Hannah Chutzpah. Laurie Black sings on one song too. For those counting, the other two tracks are instrumental.

*Why an electronic album?*

Marc went through a break up and was really miserable, so decided it was a good project to keep him sane. Creativity can be magical.

*Does it have any “real instruments”?*

Yes. Digital instruments are real instruments. Good grief.

*You know what I mean.*

Alright, there’s one song that has live bass and one that uses an old analogue synth, the rest is entirely digital.

*Can I dance to it?*

You can try. Maybe a bit.

*Is Before Victoria an electronic thing now?*

Nope. There’ll be a noisepop punk album out later this year.

*Is it ‘Steampunk’ or Victorian in any way?*

Nope. Not everything has to be, you know. All the using machines to make music is pretty Steampunk?

*How will you play these songs live?*

God knows, mate. I’ll give it a go though. We have a gig at the Crowndale in Camden, London on May 6th, so there might be some of that going on.
